A Day of Action
Tuesday is for action, but not just any act. It involved the practice of going against your habit.
The following might strike you as self-help, which I don’t usually go in for. But I am busily working before travel. As I reminded myself of this message, I thought I might share it with you. Sometimes, the most straightforward messages can move mountains. -MB
Tuesday is for action, but not just any act.
An act can be one of kindness, bravery, or demonstrated commitment. But the general framework is as follows:
Today, I will do something that goes against my habit.
What does it mean to go against one’s habit?
Suppose you usually put off unpleasant tasks until the end of the day. At this point, you may be tired or unfocused. Next time, instead of procrastinating, go against your habit. Do the unpleasant task first, then reward yourself with more fulfilling activities for the rest of the day.
Can you help a neighbor despite being busy?
Can you attend to a family member who might have been overlooked?
Can you find the courage to try something new?
More than doing unpleasant things, acts of this sort help us to grow through perceived limitations.
Maybe you seek the courage to write something you have had on your mind. Tuesdays can be dedicated to that ritual, too. But you have to start by putting down those first words.
The discerning reader might wonder how the acts relate to the Grey Robes functionally. Among many answers, the most basic is that we must train ourselves to do hard things. And hard things have to start somewhere.
Another answer is that the Age of Complexity requires constant change. Having the courage to change can be as simple as taking small actions when you would not ordinarily.
Such practice requires sitting in The Space or finding equipoise, perhaps to gather your courage. It will help you become versatile, adapt to the onrush of novelty, and transform yourself more readily into an entity of greater resilience.
These are the elements of radiative self-sovereignty.
Let Tuesday be a day of action against your habit.
